What is Check 21?

The Check Clearing for the 21st Century Act (Check 21) is a new federal law designed to streamline check processing, reduce reliance on paper, and accelerate check clearing and returns. Check 21 allows checks to be scanned, transmitted, and cleared electronically rather than on paper. The process of scanning and capturing the check is called "truncation." The truncated check information may then be used to produce "substitute checks" that carry the legal equivalency of the original paper checks they replace. A substitute check bears the front and back image of the original check.  While processed much the way normal checks are processed, substitute checks may be transported electronically. To this end, Check 21 introduces a bold new era of faster, simpler, safer deposits for you and your business.
